The Society, Religion and Technology Project has worked for over 30 years at the leading edge of technology and ethics. Under successive Directors it has established a reputation for the quality and insight of its work, culminating in the award of the UK Templeton Prize in 1999. This was a moment both to look back with gratitude to the many people who have helped us and worked with us, and to look to the future. SRT's mission is, if anything, more relevant today than ever before, with the emergence of a general public awareness of the importance of examining the ethical and societal dimensions of technology. We feel that this is an appropriate moment to widen the scope of our interaction, and invite people from the wide network we have formed over the years to become SRT Associates. This includes people who have worked in our studies and committees at different times, people in churches in Scotland and further afield, and others who identify with the work we are doing, and want to be kept in touch. We also invite groups (e.g. church congregations) to become Affliates.
In addition to the SRT Bulletin, Associates will receive regular updates about SRT’s work and information about forthcoming events. This will include press releases, texts of some of the talks given by SRT, submissions to Government and other articles. For the past two years we have held an annual SRT Associates' Gathering in April.
The SRT Project would also appreciate being able to involve some Associates during the preparation of reports and Government submissions. Such help might be in the form of offering comments on a draft paper, or suggesting avenues of enquiry for a new piece of work. If you have skills/expertise that you would like to make available to the SRT Project from time to time, please let us know.
All Associates will be invited to attend an annual gathering, giving an opportunity to meet the SRT Director and others involved in the Project, to discuss developments and contribute ideas and insights. Details of the inaugural gathering are given overleaf. We also welcome communications from Associates in writing or by email.
Following a review of SRT's work, a decision was made to set up the SRT Trust, which was duly recognised as a Scottish Charity (SC 028260) in October 1998. Its purpose is to raise money for the SRT Project, partly to offset reduced central funding from the Church of Scotland, but also to enable expansion of the work. We are now finding more opportunities than the current resources of a single Director with administrative support can meet. Due to the enormous demands which SRT's biotechnology work has generated, inevitably other areas, such as environment, IT and our outreach within Scotland have been comparatively neglected. Additional funding is needed to ensure that SRT can continue to participate effectively in public debate and decision-making, and keep Christians well-informed on a full range of issues. We are therefore looking eventually to be in a position to take on an Associate Director to assist in these tasks.
We invite Associates to make an annual donation. We suggest that £20 each would cover the costs of administering the Associates Scheme and any additional amounts would contribute to the wider work of the SRT Project.
If you would like to become an SRT Associate, or ask about the scheme,
please Contact SRT and we will send a Registration Form.
