Looking at the ethics of technology for a New Millennium

CURRENT VACANCY

Board of National Mission
SOCIETY, RELIGION AND TECHNOLOGY (SRT) PROJECT

Assistant Director
(Fixed Term - 3 Years)

In September 2001 the Board of National Mission agreed to create a new post of Assistant Director of the Society, Religion and Technology Project. This exciting development in SRT's 32 year history is in recognition of the enormous increase in the opportunities which have opened up for the Project in the past few years. The technology issues which SRT was set up to address in 1970 have emerged as mainstream questions for society. Our decision to focus on GM issues led to the publication of 'Engineering Genesis' in 1998 and this, together with SRT's strategic work on cloning, propelled the Project into the forefront of national and international debate on biotechnology.

This has led to unparalleled activity in the life of SRT and to opportunities, often at the very highest levels, that for the past 2 years have exceeded the limits of SRT's human resources. In particular our long standing work on environment and such issues as climate change and energy policy have had to take an unwelcome back seat. The post is for a 3 year period and will especially focus on these areas, and on the wider dissemination of SRT's work in the church, including developing its ecumenical context.

We are delighted at announce that Victoria Beale has been appointed and will begin her work in June 2002. This new post represents a real affirmation of the strategic importance of SRT's mission for the Church of Scotland and we are deeply grateful to the Board of National Mission for enabling its creation.
