CLIMATE CHANGE PETITION

initiated by the

World Council of Churches

in partnership with

the Church of Scotland
and
Action of Churches Together in Scotland

and supported by religious, environmental and other organisations throughout the developed world.

This Petition was circulated, with appropriate local variations, among the churches in all industrialised countries. It was initiated by the World Council of Churches and has the support of a wide range of religious, environmental and other concerned groups throughout the developed world, including Action of Churches Together in Scotland. In the UK over 27,000 church members have signed the petition, including over 6300 from Scotland. These were presented to the then Secretary of State for the Environment, John Gummer, on March 25. With the dramatic change after the General Election of May 1, we will now be urging the same concerns on the new UK Government.

At a special ceremony in Bonn on Sunday 2 March, the combined result of all the petitions were presented to the chairman of the UN negotiating meeting being held in Bonn of the nations who signed the Climate Change Convention. Former German President Richard von Weizsaecker made a strong address in support of the aims of the petition, which are to set emission targets and other measures to combat global warming beyond the year 2000, which will large enough to begin to make a serious difference to human induced climate change.

Negotitiations came to a head at the third conference of the parties who signed the climate change convention, in Kyoto in December 1997, but many detailed negotiations will continue at least until the Buenos Aires conference in the autumn of 1998.
