Looking at the ethics of technology for a New Millennium

SRT ENERGY HOME PAGE

Energy production is a vital factor in the economics of this or any country, but the global scale of use of fossil fuels is the primary cause of the severe concerns about climate change which we discuss in a series of Climate Change Pages. Find out also What the Churches are Doing about it, both in advocacy and in our own back yards. This includes Eco-Congregation Scotland programme and the Scottish Churches' Energy Efficiency Scheme, and the European Christian Environment Network.

Specifically on energy policy, we are preparing a new report to the Church of Scotland General Assembly in May 2007. This will draw on a Energy Policy Submission to the Government's April 2006 review of energy policy.

Energy Papers

We are updating our pages on energy issues, but we include here for the time being a series of briefing notes produced by the Energy and Environment working group of the Church and Soicety Council and information sheets of the SRT Project. We also list some earlier longer articles on some of the big issues.

Scottish Churches' Energy Efficiency Scheme

Energy is not just a policy issue. It's about what we do in practice. Church buildings are notoriously inefficient in their use of energy - large, draughty and intermittently used. Since 1980, the Church of Scotland has tried to practice what it preaches by setting up the Scottish Churches' Energy Efficiency Scheme, the world's first such scheme. Over half of its churches as well as some of other denominations have taken advntage of the scheme. It is estimated this could save between £0.5 million and £1 million on the church's fuel bill, and the equivalent in energy saved and pollution lessened. Has your local church had an energy audit?
