HUMAN GENETICS

SRT's Pages on Human Genetics

As well as SRT's major work in biotechnology in non-human species, we also have some substantial work in aspects of human genetics. Human Genetics

Categorising Genes; Commodifying People?

In the rhetoric of the Human Genome Project as the 'Book of Life', and developments in functional genetics and predictive medicine, we should not be carried away with a reductionist vision of humanity which genetics might lead us towards. In a paper presented at the August 2004 ELSAGEN conference on genetic databases in Reykjavik, Iceland, SRT Director Donald Bruce examines genetic defects, predictive medicine and genetic enhancement in the light of insights into the human person drawn from Christian ethics, and argues that we lose sight of these at our peril.

SRT at the Human Genome Project meeting 2001

SRT Director Donald Bruce spoke at two public events in connection with the meeting of the Human Genome Project (HUGO) in Edinburgh 19-22 April 2001, at a panel session on ethical aspects of the human genome at the HUGO Public Forum and on the ethics of gene patenting at a HUGO Satellite Meeting on Intellectual Property and Related Socio-legal Aspects of the Human Genome Project. See also SRT's Patenting Pages.

Gene Therapy

SRT gives some reflections on gene therapy issues in Ethical issues in Somatic and Germline Gene Therapy.

Germline Engineering

For some recent developments on the controversial issue of modifying the human germline, see Is Germline Therapy a Step Closer?

Embryo Selection

A baby boy born in the USA, selected to provide bone marrow for his sister dying of a rare genetic disease ... a Scots couple wanted the right to use embryo selection to have a girl, after the tragic death of their only daughter. What do we make of the ethics of genetic selection? See our article Designing Away the Gift of Life?

For SRT's extensive work on animal, plant and micro-organism genetics.

Xenotransplantation

See also SRT articles on the potential use of genetically modified pigs' hearts as human transplant organs.

Cloning

Cloning has become one of the most talked about issues. It is not the same thing as genetic engineering, but often tends to get discussed at the same time. See our extensive pages on Cloning.

The Board of Social Responsibility (BSR) of the Church of Scotland's have also produced various studied in which SRT takes part, including :

Both books and further information are available from the Board of Social Responsibility, Charis House, Milton Road East, Edinburgh EH15 2SR, tel. +44 131 657 2000, fax +44 131 657 5000.
