The City of Edinburgh Methodist Church runs a weekly session on Tuesdays from 1pm - 3pm where people can get information and help about saving and borrowing through a credit union. It is a partnership with an established Edinburgh-based credit union, Capital Credit Union and the sessions are open to all.
The aim is to bring fair and affordable savings, mortgages and loans to church members and the wider community in Edinburgh and the Lothians.
As with all credit unions, members are required to save a specific amount each week, which is then pooled and can be loaned out again at low interest rates.
The Tuesday information sessions are held at the church at 25 Nicolson Square in Edinburgh and run by church staff and specially-trained church volunteers. These volunteers take membership applications, accept deposits, and assist members with queries about savings and loans.
The interest rate with credit unions is affordable and is capped, and loans as small as £50 are available. Credit unions are not-for-profit, member-owned (mutual), financial service co-operatives regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA).
