The SRT Trust

In October 1999 the SRT Trust was formally set up, as a registered charity, Scottish Charity Number SC 028260. Its purpose is twofold. The first is to raise funds to provide more immediate support to its day to day running, to supplement those available from the Church of Scotland's Board of National Mission. Three other Scottish churches have already generously given donations, underlining the ecumencial nature which has always been a feature of SRT's work.

The second purpose of the Trust is enable SRT to expand into major new projects. SRT operates with a full time Director and part-time administrative support. The Director is now greatly overstretched and we urgent need to be able to take on additional research staff to meet the opportunities now opening up. We are looking for assistance in administering the Trust and contacting funding sources. If you know of anyone who might like to help, please let us know

The SRT Trust arose out of the May 1995 Church of Scotland General Assembly, which gave its unequivocal support to the continuation of the Project, and passed the following motion :

"Affirm the central position of the SRT Project in the mission of the Church through its vital encounter with the world of science and technology, and urge the Board of National Mission to take all possible steps to secure the funding of the Project."

In response to this affirmation, the SRT Committee and the SRT Director carried out a review of the aims, working and future goals of the Project. We strongly affirmed the continuing importance of the main vision under which the Project has worked since it began in 1970. Indeed, there is a great increase in national and international interest in the issues SRT was set up to examine. This is exemplfied by the many demands on SRT's expertise on cloning issues and the acclaim being received for our book Engineering Genesis. After being a lone voice for many years, SRT's is a project whose time has now come. The SRT Trust aims to enable SRT to take up the many opportunities to speak with an informed and balanced voice on technical issues with far-reaching social and moral implications.

SRT Associates

The SRT Associates scheme was launched in April 2000 for those who have signified a particular interest in SRT's work. Associates are kept in touch with SRT's ongoing work via regular mailings, including reports, submissions to Government, press releases, etc. To widen the base of our work, Associates with relevant skills are invited to help by comment and advice. We invite any who identify with the Project's work to contribute to its future. For more details, see our SRT Associates web page.

NEW! -  There will be an SRT Associates Conference on 31 January 2004. This is for existing Associates and anyone else interested in the work of SRT.  See more details.
